Every year on December 2nd, we celebrate National Mutt Day, a day dedicated to mixed-breed dogs and the incredible roles they play in our lives and communities. Mutts often make up the majority of pets in shelters nationwide, yet they are also some of the most loyal, loving, and uniquely wonderful companions you’ll ever meet.
As someone who works closely with pets every day and volunteers weekly at the Belleville Area Humane Society, this day holds a special place in my heart. It’s an opportunity to shine a light on the dogs who don’t always get the attention they deserve but absolutely deserve a chance at a happy, loving home.
Why Mutts Matter
Mixed-breed dogs bring something truly special to our world. They’re resilient. They’re endearing. They’re unforgettable.
Because no two mutts are exactly alike, each one has a story—and a personality—that is all their own. They’re the perfect blend of charm, character, and companionship.
National Mutt Day reminds us to celebrate those quirks and qualities, and more importantly, to advocate for the countless mixed-breed dogs waiting patiently behind shelter walls.
My Experience Volunteering at the Belleville Humane Society
Volunteering each week at the Belleville Area Humane Society has given me an up-close look at the joy and challenges these pets experience. Through hands-on care, I’ve completed the training needed to safely and confidently work with both dogs and cats—including those who may be anxious, overwhelmed, or uncertain in a shelter environment.
Many of the dogs I work with are mixed breeds who simply need time, patience, and a moment to feel safe. Watching a shy or stressed dog open up—tail wagging, eyes brightening—after a little kindness is something that sticks with you.
And it’s a reminder of how much our involvement matters.
If You Can Adopt, Consider Giving a Mutt Their Forever Home
Adoption is one of the most powerful ways to change a dog’s life. Mixed-breed dogs often spend longer waiting for homes, despite being wonderful family pets. If you are considering adding a new four-legged member to your household, National Mutt Day is the perfect time to meet the incredible dogs in need at your local shelter.
Not Ready to Adopt? You Still Have Options That Save Lives
Adoption isn’t the only way to make a difference. Here are two meaningful alternatives that support the well-being of animals right here in our community:
Become a Foster Family
Fostering provides temporary care for a dog until a permanent home is found. Even short-term fostering:
Reduces stress
Helps dogs learn home routines
Makes them more adoptable
Frees space for other animals in need
Fostering is truly lifesaving work, and it’s an excellent option for families who want to help but can’t commit to full-time pet ownership.
Take a Shelter Dog on a “Bark Break”
One of my favorite things to do as a volunteer is take dogs out for what we call a Bark Break—a short outing that gives them a much-needed break from kennel life.
A Bark Break can be as simple as:
A walk through a park
A relaxing visit at home
A trip to PetSmart
A drive for a Pup Cup
These small adventures help dogs decompress, stretch their legs, and show their true personalities—often leading to quicker adoptions.
And best of all, anyone can participate with the shelter’s approval.
Celebrate National Mutt Day—Your Way
Whether you adopt, foster, volunteer, take a dog on a Bark Break, or simply spread the word, your involvement matters. Every small act of kindness brings us closer to a world where every mixed-breed dog has a chance at the love and security they deserve.
This National Mutt Day, let’s honor the dogs who fill our shelters—and our hearts—with their extraordinary spirit.
